Republicans Sworn In with Pomp and Circumstance
Written by admin on November 20th, 2007The 2007-2009 Manchester Board of Directors and Board of Education was sworn into office last night in a ceremony at Cheney Hall. The Journal-Inquirer covered the story in today’s newspaper. The highlights:
“It took 18 years for Republicans to take control of the Board of Directors, but on Monday it took less than 45 minutes for them to be sworn into office. “
“A new beginning, a clean slate, a fresh opportunity to do good for the community,” Spadaccini said, classifying the next two years. “This will be a new experience for all of us.”
“This board will adopt new ideas regardless of where they come from or who gets the credit,” Spadaccini said. “Let’s meet the challenges head on that this community faces.”
“We, the nine of us, servants to the common good of our families and neighbors,” Spadaccini said. “Public service is about leaving things better than you found them.”
And that’s something keynote speaker Republican Lt. Gov. Michael C. Fedele agreed with.
“This is where it all starts,” he said. “Locally.”
After serving in local government in Stamford, Fedele said, he spent 10 years in the General Assembly before being tapped as second in command to Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell.
“Change not only brings new faces and new names, but new ideas,” he said, urging directors to put partisanship aside. “At times it’s difficult because there are many issues we’re torn with.”
But, he continued, “If you think with your mind and vote with your heart then most of the time you’ll make the right decision.”
